I have been having such a difficult time figuring out a new routine. Obviously I’m thrilled to be done with classes for the summer, but I really love schedules and structure. I’m hoping coming up with a plan for 1/2 marathon training will help with that.
I am sad to admit that I’m a liar. Lie one: no cardio for a few days while I recover. I was up coughing all night (hoping this is the tail end of this thing) and ended up at abs class during lunch.
The usual instructor was gone and the guy who filled in for her was crazy hard. My abs were on fire 1/2 way through the class but it felt awesome. After work I headed to the gym, which I have missed dearly.
It very conveniently decided to pour down rain as I was walking in. Nothing like starting spin class looking like a wet dog. I sweat my way through spin and it was amazing. I missed it so much and so did my legs. I definitely struggled my way through the hour.
With the exception of my loss of cardio I felt great. My sinuses have cleared up and now I just have this cute cough and have lost my voice the past few days. I sound like a 13 year old boy going through puberty. It’s pretty attractive.
I also lied about my candy intake. Lunch started off well with my new fave quinoa salad. It’s a recipe that I stole from my mom. Just quinoa and veggies. So good.
But then this happened:
They are now carrying my most favorite candy in the entire world at the work store. This is not good. These are like bite sized maple and peanut frosting bites. If you’ve never tried them you are seriously missing out. Definitely worth every calorie. I promised myself I would stop eating my weight in candy. Better luck next time.
The weather cleared up when I got out of the gym so the hubs and I worked on some more of our landscaping. Here’s a sneak peek.

So I woke up yesterday with zero voice and sinus pressure so bad that my teeth hurt. Yet another sleepless night is just not cutting it for me. Medicine is not helping, resting is not helping, so I have decided to try to sweat it out. Morning workouts are just not happening because I haven’t been sleeping well, plus it’s the worst time for congestion. I ended up going to crossfit at work during lunch yesterday and I was pretty amazed that I hadn’t lost all of my endurance, considering I worked out one time last week :(.
It felt weird to change into gym clothes, but I missed them and their stretchy waistbands. Ps don’t wear your indoor gym shoes to softball practice unless you want them covered in dirt. Lesson learned.
I think my plan will be to stick to non-cardio exercises for the next few days. I love spin and running, but I think intense cardio might be too much for me right now. We’ll see how I feel over the next day or two.

Boo for Saturdays that I have to work. Actually, it’s only for physical inventory twice a year, and only for a few hours, but having to set my alarm on a Saturday is not ideal. The worst part is the donut room that they have for everyone.
It is literally pure torture! The whole room smells like sugary donut goodness. I was so amazed that they actually had fruit this year buried under there.
I ran home and helped the hubs work on the landscaping. One truck bed full of mulch later we were ready to rock.
I’m still battling what I now believe is a full-fledged sinus infection. I’m so congested that my teeth hurt, so I may be making a trip to my favorite walk-in clinic tomorrow morning. That being said, I decided that my workout was shoveling pound after pound of mulch out of the truck and into a wheelbarrow. My arms are on fire today
We finished up for the day (final product coming soon) and got ready for Groove Walk downtown. It’s a bar crawl for all of the restaurants and bars on the main street of town. Our friend has a party before Groove Walk so that was our plan for the night. While I was getting ready my really awesome blow dryer decided to spark and then CATCH ON FIRE!
The spark went down my robe and I have never screamed so loud in my entire life. I stood in disbelief for a good minute and then got annoyed because I hadn’t actually finished blow drying my hair. I’m really not having much luck with my hair tools lately.

Once again, it was a blast and I am now even more obsessed with cider beer than ever before. Jen (third picture) introduced me to some pretty delicious flavors, like pumpkin pie, apple ginger and peach. So good!!
It was such a long, tiring day and we came home and crashed. It’s been a fun and extremely productive weekend. I’m so ready not to be sick it’s not even funny. I don’t think the ‘let my body rest and recover’ approach is working, so I am going straight for the ‘sweat it out’ approach to see how that works. Wish me luck! Hope you’re having a great weekend!

So my trip to Whole Foods last weekend was a total bust. I’ve hated everything that I’ve tried so far. I’m not happy about it.
I’m happy to report that I actually made it to the gym today! I’ve been resting because of my cold and had the genius idea to do leg day (aka death) as my comeback workout.
1/2 mile warmup on the treadmill followed by weighted squats, lunges, box step-ups, calf exercises, dead lifts and a whole bunch more x 3. We followed it up with another 1/2 mile run before I collapsed at my desk for the rest of the afternoon.
We had softball practice after work, which was so much fun. I’m pretty much the worst one on the team but I think I’m ok with it because I love the people on the team so much. Can’t wait for the season to start!
I’ve also decided that it’s best if I’m banned from my straightening iron.
That bottom mark is a scar from last year and the top one is from this morning. Sleep deprivation and straightening irons DO NOT mix.
I spent the remainder of the night icing my knees with my supervisor.
I’m still not back at 100% health-wise but at least I can spare some energy for workouts. We have a busy weekend ahead, so I’m hoping to be back at my normal OCD, zero free time, running around from the minute I wake up self.
First, sorry for the big sixfootfail of not getting this out at the normal time this morning. I have been majorly hopped up on meds and cannot kick this cold (or whatever it is).

I did it! I survived my first semester of grad school! I pumped myself full of meds and survived the day. A workout was not in the cards as I could barely hold my head up, so I figured I’d save my energy for things like sitting up and typing and carrying on conversations. I know it’s best for my body and will give it the time it needs to get better without overdoing it. I promise not to be such a boring blogger soon!
I have had zero appetite the past few days and was surviving on rice cakes. Not ideal. I finally forced myself to eat 5 clementines (1/2 because I felt like I’d need them for vitamin c and 1/2 because they are starting to mold) yesterday, so I suppose that was a win. I met my friend Ashley at Qdoba after class to celebrate and because it was the only thing that sounded remotely good for dinner. At least my taste buds when I’m sick have great taste!
Now that classes are over I am beyond excited to start training for the 1/2 marathon with Bear. Although I don’t like being sick I think it’ll be good to have a few days off and gain my strength and energy before I get to it.

This is 100% true and I died when I read it. When I eat at my desk and have to wait in line for the one microwave upstairs to heat up my food I seriously think time stands still.

Well, I spoke too soon when I said I thought my sore throat was just sinuses/allergies. I woke up at midnight with the chills, drenched in sweat, the worst headache of my life and a throat so sore and swollen that I couldn’t swallow. I spent the day on the couch working from home and I was fine as long as I didn’t sit up or move my head. 😦 I have been living off of rice cakes, cold meds, green tea and cat snuggles.
I do not do well when I’m sick. I miss exercise, my appetite and am bored out of my mind! Considering I can’t even stand up it looks like I’m out of commission in the workout department for a day or two.
I was too sick to get overly excited about finishing my Econ final, paper and presentation, but come tomorrow at 7pm I will be done with my first semester of grad school. Now to sit around for a week and panic over my grades. Unfortunately these classes rely heavily on the presentation and papers that we turn in on the final day, so I don’t get those grades back like I did for every other assignment/paper. I have an idea, but I’m curious to see how it goes. I guess there’s not much that I can do now but wait (which is great because I have SO much patience)!
Hope your week is off to a better start than mine! Any home remedies to kick a cold fast?!!
Welp, back to reality. It was such a great weekend back home catching up with family and friends. Saturday was spent shopping with my mom and dinner with the rents. I also discovered my new found love for sweet tart jelly beans.
Being back in Holland means no more pretending jelly beans are a food group. Bummer.
I am so eager to try all of my health food finds. I am also in love with a salad that my mom made that I can’t wait to make ASAP.
Yesterday we had brunch with our parents and then headed home.
The best part of the drive was being able to have the windows down. I’m like a dog in the car.
I’m looking forward to finally finishing the semester on Tuesday. I have to finish my final and a paper and presentation for Econ and I’m done! Tuesday night can’t come soon enough!
I am beyond excited to get back to the gym. With the exception of candy I have been pretty proud of my food choices since eating away from home is always difficult. I’m lucky that my mom and MIL care so much about me to have fresh fruits and veggies around when I’m home. Bear and I got a good run in on Friday but the rest of the weekend was a bit lacking in the fitness department. It’s always so much harder to get back to it when you’ve been away from the gym for a few days. Luckily, my body is craving a good sweat sesh. Unluckily, I had a terrible sore throat last night that I’m hoping to kick ASAP! I feel fine otherwise so I’m thinking it might be sinus/allergy drainage. Gotta love this time of year!
